ALL Wants You . . . to Umpire

ALL is interested in expanding its corps of adult umpires and would like to have interested persons identify themselves.  This appeal is directed to everyone, but parents with young players in the league should give this opportunity close consideration as a great way to stay involved in baseball with your child(ren).

Absolutely no experience is necessary.  All of our umpires started with no formal training and have learned the skills from a short clinic (given by our own ALL umpires) and on the field experience.  The job is not a difficult job!  ALL (and other local leagues) enjoy very great support from fans and coaches and players and the experience is fun and very pleasant.

Umpires with young players in the ALL program have discovered umpiring is a great way to stay involved.  When coaching on a team becomes a lesser option, consider umpiring.

Following a couple of hours of instruction, umpires are ready to move into their first games.  There are two umpires on the field for each game and new umpires are paired with umpires having at least a year or two of prior experience.

ALL has masks, chest protectors, and shin guards for shared use by the umpires.  Each male umpire will be required to have a protective cup and will want to obtain a ball/strike/out indicator and a plate brush.  The league has some shirts and invariably appropriate clothing can be brought together for everyone.  It is the league's wish that new umpires not be burdened with purchasing attire and equipment and paraphernalia.  ALL provides a rule book.

Umpires are scheduled two to four weeks in advance of games to be worked and the schedule is set according to the availability of each umpire.  That is, assignments are not made until after umpires indicate their availability.  Games scheduled are scheduled according to the umpire's availability.

Umpires work as volunteers, like all other adults in the program.  Each umpire will be required to submit a volunteer form, which is a requirement by the national organization and is also a process with which ALL has been involved long before it became a national requirement.  The form can be found here.

Adult umpires typically work Majors 1 games at Barcroft Park (off S. Four Mile Run, next to the DMV), but sometimes adults may be used (or may be more comfortable) in Majors 2 games at Jennie Dean or Bluemont.
