Frequently Asked Questions for Teenage Umpires

How much will I get paid?

Fees for Arlington Little League teen umpires are now $25 per game for Majors 2 and $35 per game for Majors 1. Payments will be made once a month (three times during the course of the season. Bonuses will be paid for officials who work extra games.

When are the games played?

Fully half of the games played in the Arlington Little League are played on Saturdays. Games begin in early April and run through early June. There are post season tournaments for our top umpires. Everyone must be available to umpire on Saturdays in the spring.

What if I play another sport?

If you play baseball or have other activities on Saturdays you need to make yourself available some time during the day. For example, if you have a noon baseball game, you can be available for an early morning or late afternoon baseball game to umpire. If you play more than one sport it's likely you will not have enough time to umpire. If you want to umpire but you can only umpire one day a week that's fine as long as that day is Saturday.

How is scheduling done?

Arlington Little League once again will use Arbiter software for game assignments. Instructions on how to use this software will be forthcoming. It is absolutely imperative that you know when you are available to umpire games and that you keep that information as up to date as possible in the system. There will be an opportunity to assign yourself to a game, however if you are assigned a game, you are expected to do that game.

Is training provided?

Yes, our first training session is Thursday March 11th at 7pm at Wakefield High School. We will be providing mid-season training as time permits.

What about equipment?

You will need an umpire shirt and hat, we can direct you to a vendor who can sell these to you. You will also need a ball bag, and balls/strike indicator and a plate brush. All these can be purchased through our vendor or can at a sporting good store such as Dick's (the prices from our vendor are better). You should wear black baseball cleats (Little League rules prohibit metal cleats). Grey slacks are required for anyone working a Majors 1 level game. If you are working a Majors 2 game, jeans or BLACK sweat pants are acceptable. No shorts EVER! You can get grey slacks that are not very expensive at a place like Target. Guys need to wear a protective cup when umpiring behind the plate.

Three other pieces of equipment are provided by the league. They are a mask, chest protector and shin guards. When you are umpiring behind home plate you MUST wear all three. Procedures for checking this equipment in and out will be forthcoming.

When you are umpiring in the field, you will need a small red flag as well, the league will provide these to you and they must be returned along with the plate gear.
