FAQ’s for Adult Volunteers

What kind of time commitment are you asking for?

The league is asking for the following time commitment:

  • Three training sessions for a grand total of 8 hours
    • March 4   7-9pm @ Swanson MS
    • March 11 7-9pm @ Swanson MS
    • March 15  1-5pm @ Simpson Field in Alexandria
  • Commit to umpiring at least 8 baseball games (about once a week) during the course of the season (each game lasts roughly two hours)

Our plan is to show you a schedule of games on or about April 1st from which you will be able to select 8 dates that you are able to umpire.  We are going to ask you to log into a web site that we use for assigning games and to contact your partner in a timely manner to verify the date, time and location of your game.  You should arrive at the field 15 minutes early to meet your partner, introduce yourself to the coaches and get ready for the game.

What kinds of games will these be?

You will be working Majors 2 division games with a teen-aged umpire, who will be calling balls and strikes; you will be on the bases.

What do I need to wear to the games/ training sessions?

The first two training sessions are in the classroom, so wear what you want; the final session is outdoors, so wear outdoor, baseball type apparel (jeans and a tee-shirt depending on the weather; non-metal cleats are preferred).  For games the league will provide a blue umpire shirt and hat; blue jeans are OK, grey pants of some sort are preferable, please do not wear shorts.  Athletic, outdoor type shoes should be worn (again non-metal cleats are preferable; please do not wear metal cleats).

Can I do more than 8 games?

We were kinda hoping you’d ask that question.  We are looking for folks to umpire more games for the league.  Please contact me directly if you’d like to do more.

What’s next?

Come to the first training session, you can meet me, (the umpire-in-chief) Adam (the league president) and other volunteers in the league.  We’ll go over program procedures, talk about game administration, learn little rules, go over Arlington Little League regulations and start to talk about how to umpire.  Please contact me directly if you have any other questions.  My e-mail address is dmaher6097@hotmail.com.
