Parent Tips: Preparing for Tryouts
Most area youth leagues hold tryouts for ages 9-12. League tryouts can be a stressful experience for some players and parents. Following are some tips to help make the tryout experience a successful and enjoyable one.
The tryouts usually consist of players hitting, fielding, and throwing a few balls. Coaches are assessing the overall ability of players. They make notes on players’ arm strength, catching skills, and hitting consistency and power.

  • Have the right equipment: your player should have a glove that is broken in and a bat that they can handle well.
  • Give your player some practice throwing, catching, and hitting during the weeks leading up to tryouts. Find a local gym, go outdoors when the weather is good, or sign up for a class or camp.
  • Avoid making a big deal about it. On the day of the tryout simply tell your player to have fun and do his or her best.
  • Check your league website for information on the tryouts.

We look forward to seeing you this winter.
