Offseason Baseball Opportunities

Due to weather, space restrictions in Arlington, and general lack of free time among our players, parents, and volunteers, Arlington Little League does not organize its own winter clinics or training sessions at this time.  Instead, for those of you interested in baseball opportunities, we offer you the chance to explore the following programs:

Coaches, please read the e-mail below from ALL Training Coordinator Brian Coll:

Welcome to the 2012 Arlington Little League Pre-season Coaches Training Program!

The ALL Training Clinic objective is to provide its coaches with the necessary tools so that every player graduates to the next level with the skills necessary to reach their potential.  Every parent who signs their child up to play ALL baseball should expect that regardless of the team their child plays on they will grow as a person and learn the fundamental skills of the game.  This is our job and we hope that this training program will be the basis of providing our players with those skills.

Once the season begins we encourage league commissioners and coaches to schedule specialty training (pitching, catching etc.) to further assist their players.  The Training Officer and the ALL Board are here to assist you with personnel and monetary assistance, if needed, to make your in season development the best it can be!  We are also here if you are having trouble running practices or with game management. Please send an email to training@arlingtonlittleleague.org with your request and we will do our best to assist you.

The pre-season program will have two elements to it, one, our in-house clinic will give our coaches a chance to collaborate with each other and give our new coaches a chance to ask questions and learn from our veteran coaches, high school coaches, commissioners, and alumni.  The second part will be the VBC clinic which will allow our coaches to see what coaching techniques are working outside of Arlington to produce fundamentally sound ballplayers. A handy VBC Youth Baseball Coach’s Playbook will be given to each participant at the VBC clinic.  Please preregister for the VBC clinic at the website link below.

Training Schedule:

ALL Clinics (coaches – one session is mandatory free of charge)

Saturday, February 25th from 1:00-3:30 pm, Washington-Lee High School
Saturday, March 3rd from 9-11:30 am, Washington-Lee High School

VBC/MVP Youth Baseball Coach’s Clinic’s

(One session is mandatory; ALL has contracted with VBC for this clinic so there is no charge to attend)

Sunday, March 11th from 1-3:30 pm, Paul VI High School, Fairfax, VA
Sunday, March 4th from 1-3:30 pm, Yorktown High School, Arlington, VA
(during STEP/TAD for AAA/Majors coaches)

One of the occasional frustrations of ALL from parents, players, fellow coaches and our board members has been the inconsistency of coaching, especially at the lower levels.  This is not our coaches fault as many of our new coaches are parents who want to help out and have little or no experience coaching the game.   Giving these coaches ‘a clipboard’ and some players does everyone a disservice.  Hopefully, this training program will help those new coaches and make them more comfortable and confident going into the season.

In order to make these clinics work we need the assistance of experienced coaches. Without your coaching wisdom we cannot make our in-house clinics work so please take some time out of your weekend to help us.  Pull out copies of your drill sheets, sample lineup cards and practice outlines and come to the clinic prepared to give back.  We have asked each commissioner to identify their most experienced coaches and divide them up so a few attend each session.  After a 30 minute opening session we will break down into small groups so coaches can discuss what works with their peers.  We hope that this collaboration will continue throughout the season through the contacts developed during the clinics.

If you have any questions about the clinics or would like to assist us please contact Brian Coll at training@arlingtonlittleleague.org.  We look forward to seeing everyone at Washington-Lee!
