Players use a batting tee to put the ball in play and learn the basic principles of hitting, running, and fielding.
ages: 5-6
Q: What is the game and practice schedule at this level?
Tee Ball teams begin their practice season on Saturday, March 10. Expect one weeknight practice and one weekend practice throughout the preseason.
The game schedule will be posted and distributed by March 14. The first game is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, with an Opening Ceremony scheduled for Sunday, April 15. From this point on, teams will have one weeknight practice and a Saturday game (typically in the morning). The season ends on Saturday, June 23.
Q. When will I hear from a coach?
Teams are formed between February 15 and March 1. Coaches will begin to contact their players by March 1.
Q. What does a typical game look like?
Tee Ball teams are kept small in order to maximize hitting and fielding opportunities for each player. Players hit a soft, safety ball off of a batting tee and run one base at a time, while fielders learn to field the ball and throw the ball to first base. Every player bats and plays the field in each inning. At least for the beginning of the season, all players are safe on the bases. As the season progresses, coaches have some freedom to adapt the game to suit their individual players.
Basic skills are developed, but the goal is to foster love of the game in young players. All games are played at central Arlington locations on Saturdays in the morning to early afternoon. Games are scheduled for hour-and-a-half time slots, lasting about an hour and fifteen minutes, based on the average 5 to 6-year-old’s attention span.
Q. What does my player need?
The league provides a team t-shirt and a hat for each player, as well as a tee, helmets, and bats at each game. Players at this level need their own glove, and will need to bring their own water, juice, etc. to each game. Cleats and baseball pants are not required.
Q. What else is required?
Your participation is a parent. Even if you don’t step up as a head coach, parents must be present at these games. Helping players learn how and where to throw the ball, and which direction to run and when to run there is a full team effort. More importantly, it really is fun!
