Slam Ball

Played on a smaller diamond and with an abbreviated game time, Arlington’s youngest baseball players learn the concepts and the love of the game in a structured but festive environment.
age: 4

Q: What is the game and practice schedule at this level?

Slam Ball teams begin their season on Opening Weekend.  There is no preseason practice schedule.  The first game is scheduled for Saturday, April 14.  The season ends on Saturday, June 23.  There are no practices during the season.

Q. When will I hear from a coach?

Teams are formed throughout the month of March.  Players are placed on smaller teams (usually no more than 8-10 players).  Coaches will begin to contact their players by the end of March.

Q. What does a typical game look like?

The goal of Slam Ball is to help young players fall in love with baseball by simplifying the game.  Players hit a soft, safety ball off of a batting tee and run one base at a time.  Every player bats and plays the field in each inning, and all players are safe on the bases.

All games are played on Saturday afternoons at the same time and location (tentatively between 3:00 and 6:00 at McKinley Elementary School).  Games typically last no longer than 45 minutes, due to the average 4-year-old’s attention span.  In addition, prizes are handed out to players each weekend, and there are numerous pizza parties, and moonbounce visits throughout the season.

Q. What does my player need?

The league provides a team t-shirt and a hat for each player, as well a tee, helmets, and bats at each game.  Players at this level need their own glove, and will need to bring their own water, juice, etc. to each game.  Cleats and baseball pants are not required.

Q. What else is required?

Your participation is a parent.  Even if you don’t step up as a head coach, parents must be present at these games.  Helping players learn how and where to throw the ball, and which direction to run and when to run there is a full team effort.  More importantly, it really is fun!
