Rookies

A natural extension of the Tee Ball program with the tee removed and coaches pitching to batters.
age: 7 (6 with Tee Ball experience)

Q: What is the game and practice schedule at this level?

Rookies teams begin their practice season on Saturday, March 10.  Expect one weeknight practice and one weekend practice throughout the preseason.

The game schedule will be posted and distributed by March 14.  The first game is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, with an Opening Ceremony scheduled for Sunday, April 15.  From this point on, teams will have one weeknight practice and a Saturday game each week, with an occasional weeknight game mixed in.  The season ends on Saturday, June 23.

Q. When will I hear from a coach?

Teams are formed between February 15 and March 1.  Coaches will begin to contact their players by March 1.

Q. The website and the flyers say my 6-year-old needs Tee Ball experience to play Rookies, but I know (s)he’s ready…

If every player in Arlington Little League moves up a level each year, then the quality of play at the upper levels is diluted by players who simply aren’t physically mature enough to participate at that level.  The spirit of this rule is to encourage players to play two seasons at either Tee Ball or Rookies in order to hone their skills.  But, you’re the expert on your own child.  Sign him/her up wherever you know is best.

Q. What does a typical game look like?

Teams are kept small in order to maximize hitting and fielding opportunities for each player.  Coaches pitch a soft, safety ball off to players while fielders learn to field the ball and throw the ball to any appropriate base.  Every player bats and plays the field in each inning.  Players begin to learn the concept of force outs, and the position of catcher.

Basic skills are enhanced as position play becomes more emphasized.  Games are scheduled for two hour time slots, but usually last about an hour and a half at most.

Q. What does my player need?

The league provides a team t-shirt and a hat for each player, as well as a tee, helmets, catcher’s gear, and bats at each game.  Players at this level need their own glove, and will need to bring their own water, juice, etc. to each game.  Cleats and baseball pants are not required, but should be worn at this level.

Q. What else is required?

Your participation is a parent.  Even if you don’t step up as a head coach, parents must be present at these games.  Helping players learn how and where to throw the ball, and which direction to run and when to run there is a full team effort.  More importantly, it really is fun!
